Rules There are two players, Red and White. White begins after which turns alternate. On his turn a player moves or enters one piece. There are three pieces in the game:
Stacked men move as one piece. In the initial position there are 6 Shogi pawns on the 3rd rank, 6 Chess pawns on the 2nd, while the back rank remains vacant. The stacked men beside the board (as well as men captured by the opponent) are just a reserve of which the required pieces in hand can be made. |
Capture and its consequences
Pieces capture by replacement.
- If a Shogi pawn is captured, the capturing side gets a Chess pawn 'in hand'.
- If a Chess pawn is captured the capturing side gets a knight 'in hand'.
- If a knight is captured there's no reward for the capturing side.
Captured pieces are removed from the game and the men may be used by the opponent for 'pieces in hand'. Pieces in hand may be dropped on a player's own back rank at the cost of a turn.
Object
The first player to move a piece onto the opponent's back rank wins.
