Block - a simple one
The fifth point on a diagonal is fairly popular as an opening move. This section reveals some of the implications of a simple block, a move that snatches one of the sides away from an opponent's stone on a diagonal. The scenario at the top is fairly straightforward. White is satisfied with the corner and black comes out in a situation Go players will recognize as gote, that is: after white takes the corner, the black group is in danger of being killed and black must reply with a move like o9, to create a point of escape if white starts pushing along the o-line. The scenario at the bottom is self explanatory: white's pushing action is carried rather far and white 16 is a mistake that loses the game. |
