Initial positionYari Shogi carries some of the characteristics of the Japanese game of Shogi to extremes, while at the same time putting the rules and the choice of pieces into a logical framework. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the rules of Shogi.

The choice of pieces is based on the western chess set: the rook, the bishop and the knight. The game might thus be characterised as 'western Shogi'. The diagram shows the board and the initial position of the pieces. All pieces are of the same color. Sides are only distinguished by their direction. On the reverse side of each piece its promoted version is depicted.

Yari Shogi is featured David Pritchard's The Encyclopedia of Chess Variants (G&P Publications, P.O. Box 20, Godalming, Surrey GU8 4YP, UK - ISBN 0-9524142-0-1).
