A few questions about Croda. I know it was "not invented here", so I apologize in advance if this is not kosher.
You say that Croda is minimal; nothing can be removed without killing the game. How would it be killed by making the promotion rule like English rather than Polish draughts? How would it be killed by making it "take as you please" instead of mandatory maximum capture?
Thanks for your time.

I tried it with Firefox and IE11. With Chrome the Play/Watch screen has the same problem.

Sorry about it all. And thanks for trying and reporting some browsers.
Could you try again - it should be fixed now.

Your change to a new style did not go quite well: the area where e.g. a gameboard is shown is much too small...

Thanks for pointing it out - haven't tried enough browsers (my guess is you're using Firefox). It will be corrected.

Ja, sorry daarvoor, de laatste Java security update blokkeerde de zaak. Onze applets zijn nu (vanaf 25-01-2014) gecertificeerd, zodat het allemaal weer soepel werkt (na 1 keer toestemming verlenen).

Quite annoying, those commercial entries in your guestbook! Can't you block them? Or do you get money for it? ;-)

Yes, annoying indeed. Obviously, we haven't managed to block them

Dear Christian,
What re your thoughts on a game on a hexhex board having the move mechanism of Hexsymple and the target forms of Havannah?
An understandable result of a simple mashup here is that rings are really, really easy to form. So I would suggest that there be a caveat on the cells it surrounds, or scoring based on the number of winning structures one has. I would love to hear what you have to say on the subject (especially since the proposed game is blatantly part of your intellectual property).

Well, you noticed the problem. Havannah is often labeled a connection
game, but actually it's a race game. I don't say it couldn't work, but
it's not all that symple.

Correction, the formula is: NumberOfTurns=NumberOfSingleplacements + ((Side x Side - 1)/2 - NumberOfSingleplacements)/NumberOfSingleplacements.

Hi Christian, in the About Symple page your estimate of the number of turns is a little rough, and the square root is not accurate for the 15x15 board: I made a little program to calculate the number of turns, and it turns out that for the 19x19 board with 10 single placements you can fill the 180 points in 17 turns, so the total turns are 27 also, which is not mentioned on the About Symple page. The formula is: NumberOfTurns=NumberOfSingleplacements + ((Side x Side - 1)/2) / NumberOfSingleplacements. For size 15x15 you get (i=NumberOfSingleplacements): i=5 ) 27 turns, i=6 ) 24 turns, i=7 ) 22 turns, and for i=8 to i=14 ) 21 turns!

On 2nd thought it makes sense, because the program expects the password of my opponent...
Maybe the errormessage could be extended, someting like "... (or it is not your turn to make a move)"?

That's a good suggestion, I'll add it to the message.

In Checkers reaching the back rank results in promotion, and this marks the end of the move, whatever the manner of reaching it.
In Draughts a man reaching the back rank in a capture is still considered to be a man, and if a further capture is possible, it must proceed. So reaching the back rank does not necessarily mark the end of the move, as in Checkers, nor does it result in immediate promotion, as in Shashki. Altering the rule as it is and has been for a century and a half, either way, would have some inpact on the game's behaviour, but possibly less than one might expect. It was a choice, yes, and the resulting rule has given no reason to alter it, certainly not with all theory now being based on it. Ljuban was a Draughts master and took the whole structure of Draughts to Croda because he knew he could depend on it.
"Take as you please" would throw away a true wealth of threats and combinations that make up the tactical core of the game. The public at large is blissfully unaware of the depth of this ocean. Unfortunately most everybody "knows" Draughts and feels entitled to an opinion.
And sure, Shashki has great tactical depth too. But not that great.
