Stigmergy is based on Mike Zapawa's territory game Tumbleweed, a game build on a Line of Sight placement protocol in which stacks may emerge, grow or be captured depending on the numbers of friendly or unfriendly stacks they see. A very very essential Line of Sight game.

The inventors, Luis Bolaños Mures and Steven Metzger, decided to replace a variable height value of a stack by a discrtete "control yes/no" criterion which allows the use of the protocol with single stones instead of stacks. That was a very good step leading to a very good game that next sprouted the Hex variant Lox.
